The RHS Chelsea Flower show which ran from the 22nd - 26th May this year. The very popular show held annually features a whole range of garden designs and ideas. One particular common theme was space travel (and even time travel).
A garden designer called Sarah Eberle showed off a garden suitable for use on Mars. Titled 600 Days with Bradstone it gives and idea of what may be suitable to help an astronaut cope with a 600 day tour of duty on the planet.
For the first time the worlds most famous police box time machine the “TARDIS” from Doctor Who also feature.? It was to show the changes in garden design from the 1960’s which was when the science fiction series was first aired compared to today. The “today” garden highlighted current common environmental themes such as the need for increased recycling.

Or so the UK media is busy spouting as snow has fallen in Southern England. This is not actually correct as usual as it has been winter in Scotland for the past couple of months but as London is not in Scotland this does not count.
Anyway getting back to the snow as mentioned the worst effected areas are Southern England stretching North up to the Midlands. (For our non-UK this reads about 120miles North West of London up to Birmingham) we have airports closed at Gatwick, Stansted and general travel chaos across this region. The question you may be asking is how much snow? A couple of metres? no the actual answer according to latest reports is about 5cm! may be 15cm on higher ground. All I can say is it is a good job we do not live the US midwest otherwise the UK would shut-down completely in winter.
The cold snap is not expected to last long and will probably be gone by the end of the weekend, though forecasters are predicting the possibility of a few further cold snaps in March in the UK. So much for an earlier start in the garden this year
And me located about 90miles north of Stansted? No snow at all
(Update I was incorrect we now have a thin covering. Let the chaos begin)

February 14th a special day for all bird lovers in the UK. Its the annual national bird box week run by British Trust for Ornithology Society. Its aim is to help offset the decline in natural nesting habitats by getting people to but up more nesting boxes in their gardens.
Farmers can also help out as they can get funding through the Countryside Stewardship Scheme to manage environments which will attract birds to the land and this includes the provision of nest boxes for a range of species.
Important tip: Do not forget different species have different nesting habits and prefer certain styles of nesting boxes. Though in our experience once a couple of birds have decided that they like the location they will soon “adapt” the box to suit their requirements no matter what style of box is used.
Also it is Valentines Day on the 14th so do not forget present for your other half whatever species you are.
